Joey

Outlaw’s Joey

DOB: 27 October 2023
Weight: 17 lbs
Height: 14″ at the shoulder

Why We Love Him

Joey blended in our family like he was always a part of it, it was so natural. From Bill picking him up in Colorado and bringing him home to us, to the way he has become my son’s dog, sleeping in his room each night. Joey is a total joy to have in the family.

From a breeding perspective, not only is he beautiful and structurally sound, but he has a slightly lower drive than our other dogs. Our other lines really like to hunt rodents in the yard, even pretending they can hunt rabbits, Joey isn’t like that. He is much more interested in people and when he sees a rabbit, he only decides it’s interesting after the other dogs say so. We love how people-oriented he is and we look forward to meeting his puppies!

Temperament & Personality

Joey is confident and playful. He is a total goofball, with a load of personality. He likes to be in the middle of everything, but isn’t pushy. He likes to play with the ladies and hasn’t quite figured out how to be Don Juan, but he thinks he is.

Color

Joey is considered a Blue Tri Irish (tuxedo pattern). He carries chocolate on one side, allowing for 50% of his puppies to be chocolate or fawn, based on the mother’s coloring. All of his puppies will get the blue dilute gene from him, potentially creating blue pups if bred to a female who is blue or carries blue. He also carried piebald, so some of his pups can be white with patching.

What He Brings to the Program

We’ve been very careful to retain structurally sound (and beautiful!) Rat Terriers, with nice shoulders, balanced muscle tone, and correct rear angulation (giving them stronger knees that are less prone to injury). We searched to find a new stud that fit the bill with our requirements, but Jo-Jo is our boy!

Joey is a Dream Come True

I had been looking for a pup to breed to Mochachino for a while. I had some strict requirements, I wanted stud with nice rear angulation (harder to find in Rat Terriers than I hope) to keep consistency and health in my lines. However, I always wanted a pretty dog, I’m a sucker for the colors. I wanted a dog who was either chocolate and carried blue or blue who carried chocolate, had to be a tri-colored dog, also, I love the tan points. One morning I woke up and Sheree  had posted a picture of Joey. I LOVED his structure, such balance! Sheree is a dog-show judge, so she’s got that part figured out! His mama is a chocolate tri Irish, while his dad is a Blue Tri Piebald, EXACTLY the parents I was looking for!

I wasn’t sure where Sheree lived, but, as I knew it was destined to be, I saw she lived in Colorado, only two hours from where Bill, my husband, was working at the time! I contacted her, we talked, and decided to add him to the Bear Paw Family. Bill, who loves me dearly, was able to pick him up and drive him all the way down to me that same evening–a 12-hour drive! It worked out great and we are so excited to have Joey as a part of our program.

He Always Wants to Be With Us

What we love about Joey is how he is always up for an adventure. He loves to be with us and involved in the action. While he gets along well with the other dogs, old and young alike, he always prefers to be in our company. When he was little, I would stuff him in my Carhartt vest can carry him around town with me. Now that’s he’s bigger, we can take him for trips and he walks instead of being carried.

Hunter, my son, has taken a shine to him, and taught him to sit. He made the mistake of using cheese and now anytime Joey hears the fridge door open he comes running in, he promptly puts his butt on the ground in a perfect sit, cocks his head, and stares at you. He wants you to see he’s a good boy and that he deserves some cheddar.
